Make sure your young driver is insured!

This should come as no surprise to you -- when your son or daughter turns 16 years old and passes their test for driving privileges, they need to be added on to your auto insurance.  While most policies give a short window of automatic coverage for the new driver, this is more or less just to give you time to get home and pick up the phone.

youthful-operatorThere is a cost to insure these drivers.  And you probably understand that until they gain more experience, they are more likely to have an accident.  The cost is predictable and it can increase your payment -- sometimes a significant amount.

If the 'automatic' window closes and the new driver remains unlisted, your company could deny payment.  Please understand that they need to collect the premium for the young driver.  And that they can only provide coverage when they fully understand and accurately price the risk that they are assuming.

If you have questions, please contact your Kelly Insurance Agency, Inc. agent today.

Insurance Cost CuttingOne way to avoid sticker shock or buyer's remorse when purchasing a new car is to consider expenses you may encounter down the road.

For instance, experts say that while most people anticipate the purchase price, taxes and registration fees associated with a vehicle, many forget that the insurance they need to protect their vehicle could come with a hefty price tag. Fortunately, there are ways to keep insurance costs down while maintaining the type and amount of coverage a new car typically requires.

To help consumers control car costs—from sticker price to insurance premiums—The Progressive Group of Insurance Companies offers these tips:

  • Decide ahead of time how much money you can spend and what type of vehicle best suits your needs.
  • Research crash test and accident data (try www.edmunds.com)
  • Check with several dealerships and get firm quotes in writing. Having quotes from several places can help you negotiate your best deal.
  • Shop around for financing. Rates vary between institutions.
